The pancreas is located in the abdominal area. Its main job is to produce insulin. Insulin enables cells to absorb glucose, or sugar, and turn it into energy. When there is an inadequate supply of insulin, glucose accumulates in the blood leading to diabetes. Obesity, heredity, stress and lack of exercise are some of the causes of this disease.

Sugar is a natural craving of our body because it provides energy. However, when there is more sugar than insulin in the body, complications start to arise. Sugar is known as a comfort food and when we are stressed, we immediately search for candy, ice cream, cookies or foods loaded with sugar. Oils are also sweet. That is why we love fried foods. There are sweet, healthy foods such as mangoes, apricots, yams, squash, carrots and honey. These foods usually don’t satisfy our yearnings.

Taste stimulates sensory nerve fibers leading to the central nervous system. The tongue supplies gustatory or taste, olfactory or smell and tactile or touch sensations. According to Siddha and Ayurveda Medicine, if a person consumes the 6 tastes daily even in small amounts, healing will occur. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, astringent and pungent.

Like sugar, our bodies also crave salty foods. Fish, chips, celery, olives, soups, breads and soy sauce satiate our desire for salt. Sour foods cause our mouths to water and stimulate our digestion. Yogurt, buttermilk, sour cream, citrus fruits, vinegar and pickles are among the sour foods. Astringent foods create dryness in the mouth. White potatoes, beans, grapes, cranberries, blueberries, basil and rosemary fall into the astringent category. Bitter is usually considered medicinal to our bodies. Dark, green leafy vegetables such as romaine and kale emit the bitter taste. Also, neem, turmeric, eggplant and rhubarb discharge bitter sensations. Pungent foods create heat in the body and are usually spicy. If this taste stimulates the digestive tract too much, it will create inflammation. At the same time, these foods increase the metabolic rate so pungent foods are beneficial as well. Green and red peppers, jalapeno, ginger, garlic, onion, wasabi and horseradish should be used in moderation.

The best medicine you could give your body is food. Figs are efficacious for healing diabetes. You could eat the fruit or take the milk from the tree. Take a spoonful of fig milk with butter and eat. Also, use the milk as a topical ointment on external wounds. Teas made from fig leaves are effectual as well. While eggplant is good for health, the fully riped eggplant will induce diabetes so this vegetable should not be consumed often.

I mentioned mudras in the Acid Reflux article. I would like to tell you about 4 additional hand gestures that are excellent for healing diabetes. Pran Mudra activates the first chakra at the base of the spine. This improves vitality and awakens the body. It decreases fatigue and nervousness. Also, it ameliorates leg sensations. Pran Mudra controls anger, fears, jealousy and irritability and instills joy, hope and energy.

Put the tips of your thumb, ring finger and pinky together and extend the remaining fingers. This should be done with both hands. If you put the thumb onto the fingernails of the other 2 fingers, the left and right hemispheres of the brain will be integrated. The water, earth and fire elements joined together remove toxins. Therefore, blood circulation is improved. For best results, do this mudra for 15 minutes 3 times per day.

Apana Mudra supports the removal of impurities from the body and helps alleviate urinary problems. It stimulates the liver and gallbladder. Place the tip of the thumb, middle and ring fingers together on each hand and extend the remaining fingers for 15 minutes 3 times per day.

The Rudra Mudra develops the earth element which is in charge of the stomach and pancreas, thereby relieving tension and pain, or sensations. Place the thumb, ring and index fingers together on both hands and extend remaining fingers. While in this position, visualize a wheel. Imagine yourself on the spoke or edge of the wheel while it is turning. You must concentrate and use strength to maintain balance. This is similar to life in general. When one is centered, we have balance and joy.

The Mukula Mudra helps cure any disease. Place the 4 fingers and thumb together and put the mukula mudra on any body part that aches. It immediately directs energy to the suffering cells in the area of the intense sensation. For the pancreas, form the mudra with your right hand and place it on the lower part of the right sternum. At the same time, use your left hand to stroke along the ribs on the left side of the body 21 times.

My father had a severe case of diabetes. He had excruciating sensations in his feet and legs. I prefer to call pain sensations because the word pain alerts the body into panic mode. Sensation has a similar connotation. However, the brain does not associate the word sensation with panic. My father’s limbs became gangrenous and needed to be amputated. Once this occurred, he quickly slid into a state of dementia. If I knew then what I knew now, his limbs probably would have been saved.

Similar to my father, years ago I began having excruciating sensations in my feet and legs. Meditation, yoga, proper breathing, mudras, positive affirmations, energy healing and the 6 tastes helped me heal. I am thrilled to say I love my feet and have tremendous gratitude to them and all my body parts. If the disease wasn’t encroaching upon the cells in my body, I would never have explored natural healing modalities. Our body intelligence always gives us the answers to a healthy anatomy. All we have to do is listen and take action!
